Evergreen Garden Club

What a season of extremes…a freezing cold winter lasting until the end of April, then dry and hot for two weeks, and then cool and rainy for three weeks…we gardeners are now left wondering what July will bring.

Tis the season for garage sales, so keep your eye out for an interesting container, as sometimes the strangest items can make the best planters.  Consider rain boots, old sinks and  basins, industrial pipes and tubes, or even baskets!  Always ensure your newest container has plenty of drainage to allow the plant to drink and breathe.  If too much water stays in the roots, your new planter will not be a successful bloomer.

June 17thwas our last meeting and the hall was full of members eager to   create some stepping stones for their gardens.  Cement was mixed, poured into molds, and decorations added on top.  Every member went home with at least one stepping stone and a lot of good visiting under their belts.  Many thanks to the many members who stayed afterwards to help clean up the mess!

Our next meeting is July 15that 6:30pm and we will be meeting at the Senior’s Centre since the Community Hall will be undergoing renovations.  Our annual container contest winners will be announced at this highly-anticipated meeting and then

we will do a tour of the winning  containers to see what makes a container great. Two members of the Horticultural Society will be viewing the eligible containers during the day and will choose the winners.

Do you have containers that you are especially proud of?  Imagine, you would have a chance to win the $50 grand prize, if only you were a  member of the Garden Club.  Entering our Container Contest is just one of the perks.  Garden Club members  enjoy garden trips, speakers, crafts and more for a measly $10 annually.  Call Mary for more information at    406-5710.
